Synopsis

After the death of the postmaster in the small town of Twin Forks, a package of letters is found in his desk, dated 5 years previously and never delivered. The delayed letters are put in the mail, causing numerous complications in the lives of the local residents. Amy Lufkin, complacently married to a fine man, receives a proposal from Lee Cross, a former sweetheart who in the interim has made a fortune in oil. Andy Gillespie, the town drunkard, discovers that he has inherited a fortune. Irma Stacy, the druggist's wife, opens a letter from her husband's old sweetheart just as he opens one from her old sweetheart, causing a good deal of anger in both of them. Amy becomes dissatisfied with her lot until Lee Cross returns to town and proves to have become a vain, vulgar dandy; she then returns gratefully to domestic life. Irma Stacy and her husband make up. Fred Henley's dog-raising scheme fails, and Andy, more sober than usual, appoints him the superintendent of his new factories, enabling Fred to marry his sweetheart, Agnes.
