Synopsis

Miserly Caleb Fry, who lives all alone with his servant, Tatterly (whom he closely resembles), disinherits his nephew, Donald Brett, when Donald becomes an artist rather than a businessman. Caleb wills his entire fortune instead to Hector Kindon, a cousin. Tatterly dies, and Caleb, moved by some strange whim, assumes Tatterly's identity, leading the world to believe that Caleb Fry has died. Kindon turns out to be a worthless, drunken scoundrel, and Caleb is forced to live with Donald, who, thinking him to be Tatterly, willingly takes him in. Caleb gets his hands on several thousand dollars, ruins Kindom in the market, and gives his new fortune to Donald, who immediately marries Ella Tarrant. Caleb goes to live with them in the country.
