Synopsis

Simeon Tetlow works relentlessly to make his Stillwater Railroad profitable for the stockholders, but he is merciless to his employees. When he orders Hugh Tomlinson, an aging engineer who has been on duty for eighteen hours, to make yet another run, Hugh falls asleep at the throttle and collides with the rear of a train. Simeon discharges Hugh, who, unable to find work, nurses a steadily growing hatred of his former employer. Simeon anonymously provides Hugh and his family with free lodgings, but soon afterwards, the overworked railroad president suffers a nervous breakdown. When J. Montgomery Nixon, the president of the rival Central Railroad, takes advantage of Simeon's illness to drive down the Stillwater stocks, Simeon, despite his weakness, appears in public to reassure the stockholders. On Christmas Eve, Hugh's little grandson steals away to Simeon's house to await Santa Claus's arrival. Simeon, deeply moved, is arranging gifts for the boy when Hugh arrives, and the two men are reconciled.
