Synopsis
Joe Blackfeather and his daughter, Mary, who own a band of Appaloosas--spotted horses bred by the Nez Percé Indians in northern Idaho--find one of the horses, Sky Princess, dead. Her colt is being followed by a mountain lion, and, panic-struck, jumps into a river; but Mary's dog, Silver, leads him to safety. Mary, though only a "squaw," is the tribe's finest equestrian, and she receives permission from the chief, who disapproves of her rodeo activities, to take care of the colt, named Holy Smoke by the tribe. She trains him for the difficult terrain that a cattle horse must endure; but when the tribe needs money, Mary is forced to sell him. The man who buys Holy Smoke cannot control him, and he is sold cheap to a rodeo rider, Gilly, who treats him roughly. After Holy Smoke again proves too wild to tame, Gilly's mate, Wilbur, the rodeo clown, gently tries his luck. Meanwhile, the date of the treacherous Hell's Mountain Stampede and Suicide Relay Race approaches. At the rodeo, Mary is shocked to see Holy Smoke performing in Wilbur's clown act. When a bull becomes uncontrollable in the ring, Silver leaps to help Holy Smoke. Sympathetic, Wilbur sells the horse back to Mary, and she trains him for the big race. In that race, Holy Smoke's endurance proves itself when Mary's partner, her brother Dale, is thrown by his mount. Holy Smoke makes up the lost time and, with help from Silver and skillful riding by Mary, wins.
