Synopsis

Irene, a little girl who lives in the poorhouse, enacts fairy stories with her friend William while dreaming of a fairy godmother who will come and rescue her from the witch who runs the poorhouse. One day, Irene's dream comes true with the appearance of Mrs. Chandler, the wife of a wealthy mill owner, who adopts her. Years later, Irene meets William again and recognizes him as her Prince Charming. William has invented a wonderful loom and is leading the workers in a strike against the harsh policies of mill owner Chandler. After a number of complications, Irene brings about a reconciliation among all of the parties and William's invention proves a success. William thus is given control of the mill, and the Prince and Princess marry and live happily ever after.

Notes

The working title of this film was The Princess from the Poorhouse. Information in the Community Motion Picture Bureau records and the George Kleine Papers list a film entitled Princess in Poor House, produced by Thomas A. Edison, Inc., directed by Ben Turpett, written by Paul H. Sloane, and starring Robert Edeson. Although Edeson was not in The Royal Pauper, it is likely that the film referred to as Princess in Poor House was in fact The Royal Pauper.
