Synopsis

Struggling American painter William Peyton promises to return to his fiancée, Alice Travers, and then goes to London to perfect his art. Arline Arrington, William's first English model, falls seriously ill, and before she dies she makes William vow to take care of Claudia, her young daughter. Meanwhile, Alice grows more and more impatient, and then, when she hears about Claudia, she goes to London to insist that William give up his ward and come back to the United States to get married. William refuses, so Alice marries Paul Helmer instead. Many years later, after Paul has died, Alice goes to London once again to give William another chance to marry her. As soon as he sees her, William realizes that he stopped loving her years before, and discovers that he really loves Claudia. As a result, William marries the woman whom he always regarded as his daughter.
