Synopsis

Senator Frank Deering accepts a bribe from mill owner Henry McCarthy to alter a committee report on the conditions of child labor, after he learns from his dying friend, Judge Vernon, that McCarthy bonds worth $100,000 had been stolen by the judge and replaced with blank paper. In order to protect the name of his best friend, and also to protect the judge's daughter Grace, the girl he once loved, from a forced marriage to McCarthy, Deering takes the bribe, which will also give him possession of the blank certificates. Realizing the great wrong that he has done, however, Deering confesses his crime and is sentenced to prison. There his only solace is the thought that his self-sacrifice has cleared the name of the judge and saved the happiness of the girl he loves.
