Synopsis

Betty, the romantic daughter of inventor Michael Dover, obtains work as a seamstress at the fashionable home of Mrs. Ballard, one of the Four Hundred. Betty falls in love with handsome Billy Ballard, falsely telling one of her suitors that Billy has been courting her. Her father learns of this "romance" and announces that he will ask Billy his intentions. In desperation, Betty goes to Billy and confesses her deception; he goodnaturedly agrees to go along with her story and asks her father for permission to call on her. Billy quickly falls in love with the dreamy girl, but his mother strongly disapproves and fires Betty. One of Michael's inventions, a horseless carriage, is given a public test and explodes. Billy breaks off his engagement to Ursula Kent (engineered by his mother), pays off Michael's debt to Jerry Flint, a moneylender, and marries Betty.aInventorsSeamstressesFilial relationsCourtshipHorseless carriages
