Synopsis

Ernest Gledhill, a hotel clerk in the small town of Compton Center, meets Chicago confidence men Swell Dresser and Slim McClearn who convince him that fortune awaits him in the big city. When the crooks offer him a job as secretary of the Typemetal Club, Ernest bids farewell to his sweetheart, Eleanor Ramsdell, and accompanies them to Chicago. There government authorities on the trail of the Swell Dresser and McClearn advise the naïve clerk that he is being used as a tool in various grafting schemes. Chagrined, Ernest returns home to learn that his deceased aunt has made him her beneficiary. However, he hesitates in calling on Eleanor, feeling that he is not worthy of her companionship. Having heard of Ernest's good fortune, the two crooks return to town and threaten to expose him unless he pays them off. Ernest confesses his miserable affair in Chicago to Eleanor, who is so trusting in his integrity that Ernest, transfused with courage, pounces on the crooks when they return for their hush money. As he finishes pummeling them, a federal agent enters and arrests the crooks for violating mail privileges.
