Synopsis

In 1846, California patriots join forces to avert a suspected plan of dictator General Vallero to sell out to Russia. Juan, a handsome youth, is selected to crush the plot, preventing his plan to elope with Elena, a convent novice. General Vallero, actually Elena's father, visits the convent, tells her he is a friend of her dead father, and takes her to Monterey; en route, Juan stops Vallero's runaway team, winning the general's profuse thanks. Both men remain unaware of each other's identity. Believing he has been tricked, Juan is about to fulfill his mission during a fiesta when he is seized by soldiers; later he returns to Vallero's home and is recaptured and sentenced to be shot. Elena manages, however, to summon marines from a warship in the bay; Juan is saved from death, and he and Elena are reunited.
