Synopsis
Poppy Destinn, a mistreated orphan, runs away from her inland Africa home and becomes lost in the jungle. Pursued by a native, she is rescued by Carson but refuses to stop long enough to make his acquaintance because of her fear. She then takes refuge in the home of Luce Abinger, a man who has little respect for women. Under the pretense of adopting Poppy, he marries her, and because the ceremony is spoken in French, she does not understand what is happening. While Luce is away on a trip, Carson staggers into the garden while suffering from a fever. There he meets Poppy and they swear their love as she delivers herself to him. When he recovers, however, he only recalls the meeting as a dream. As a result of their meeting, Poppy is pregnant, however, and with the birth of her child, Luce is infuriated. She runs away from him and travels to London where, after many trials and tribulations, including the loss of her child, she blossoms forth as a successful novelist. Returning to Africa, she meets Carson, who tries in vain to recall the circumstances of their last meeting. Luce, his better nature finally asserting itself, agrees to an annulment and Poppy is free to marry Carson.
