Synopsis

Rachel Abrams, daughter of struggling ghetto pawnbroker Aaron Abrams, elopes with Russell Mortimer, a wealthy young member of society. Russell's father quickly offers $10,000 to terminate the match. Aaron accepts over Rachel's objections, hoping to use the money for revenge. Rachel dies in giving birth to a daughter, Ruth; Aaron becomes a ruthless moneylender on Wall Street; and love develops between Ruth and Sheldon Sherman, protégé of Russell Mortimer, and between Hazel Mortimer, Russell's daughter, and Saul Cohen, son of an old friend of Aaron Abrams. Under a pseudonym, Aaron puts the squeeze on Russell and insists that Ruth marry Saul. There are complications of love and finance; Abrams sends Ruth away for giving her love to a gentile; but the old man finally relents, and all are reconciled.
