Synopsis
Following the death of her parents, Mary, refused recognition by her grandfather because of the circumstances of her parents' marriage, is placed in an orphanage. There she is mistreated, humiliated, and, when caught by a matron outside the grounds playing ball with a youthful admirer, flogged. Later, she learns that her grandfather is a well-known judge and that her father was a British aristocrat. A letter to her uncle brings prompt aid, and rescued from her surroundings she remains faithful to a young admirer.
