This film, along with the Metro Romeo and Juliet, and other Shakespeare related films from 1916, was released to coincide with the 300th anniversary of William Shakespeare's death. Among the many other film versions of Shakespeare's play are: the 1916 Metro Pictures Corp. version; the 1936 M-G-M version, starring Leslie Howard and Norma Shearer and directed by George Cukor; the 1961 United Artists release West Side Story, starring Natalie Wood and Richard Beymer and directed by Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins (see AFI Catalog of Feature Films, 1961-70; F6.5499); the 1964 Italy-Spain co-production Giuletta e Romeo, directed by Riccardo Freda (see AFI Catalog of Feature Films, 1961-70; F6.4150); and the 1968 Italy-Great Britain co-production, starring Olivia Hussey and Leonard Whiting and directed by Franco Zeffirelli (see AFI Catalog of Feature Films, 1961-70; F6.4150a).
