Synopsis

Fortune-hunting Lord Percy, eager to marry into the Brentwood family, hires struggling attorney John Stoddard to go to South Africa to find Lady Brentwood's long-lost granddaughter. While there, John rescues Margot from her brutal guardian, James Varley, and then, unable to locate the missing woman, decides to bring Margot back to London to pose as the granddaughter and marry Percy. Lady Brentwood, whose daughter was killed in South Africa, is delighted at finally having an heir, but then, conscience-stricken, John and Margot decide to confess. While they do so, however, Varley arrives, determined to gain revenge on John. Suddenly, though, he softens, and explains that he killed Margot's parents, who were Lady Brentwood's daughter and son-in-law, and raised their child. Then, after the discovery that she really is Lady Brentwood's heir, Margot decides to ignore Percy and marry John instead.

Notes

Contemporary reviews differ in attributing the scenario to either Sarver or Thew, and Paramount studio records indicate that both men wrote scenarios for the film, with Thew's work seemingly following Sarver's. Studio records indicate that Thew received the scenarist's credit on the film's main titles.
