Synopsis

In feudal Spain, Montero, son of a Gypsy leader, is about to take a bride according to primitive ritual, when the Duke de la Garda demands his right as feudal lord--to take the bride to his castle for a night. Rather than accede to the duke's advances, the girl chooses death by her own hand. Montero swears vengeance on the duke and turns outlaw and bandit. When the duke takes the king's niece, Princess Marie, for his bride, following a spectacular wedding feast, Montero and his outlaws kidnap Marie and the duke, taking them to an abandoned castle overlooking the sea; the duke is branded and returned, while Marie, in spite of herself, falls in love with Montero but returns to the duke. Disguised as a priest, the duke overhears her confession of love and imprisons her; Montero is captured and is to be burned at the stake, but he inspires the mob to riot and kill the duke.
