Synopsis
Lured to the United States by a greedy padrone , a young Italian arrives in New York and dubs himself "Tony America." Hoping to make his fortune, Tony becomes a fruit peddler, but because the padrone holds him in debt for his passage to America, he remains poor. In order to brighten his difficult existence, Tony marries Rosa Picciano, his landlady's daughter, unaware that the girl merely wishes to escape her strict mother. Soon after the birth of their daughter Giulia, Tony learns that Rosa has carried on an affair with a German butcher for several years, and later, she divorces him on an unjust charge. When Tony's friends scornfully suggest that the butcher fathered his baby, he nearly kills the German, but the sight of Giulia clutching the American flag stops him. Tony's friend, Marie Dean, promises to help him regain custody of Giulia, whom he dearly loves, and in the end, the two succeed in winning her back.
