Synopsis

Although Barbara Preston works diligently to maintain her farm for herself and her little brother Jimmy, she finally finds herself unable to make the mortgage payments. The avaricious Stephen Jarvis, who holds the mortgage, offers to cancel the debt if she will become his housekeeper, but Barbara, suspicious of his motives, refuses. In despair, Barbara visits the auctioneer and arranges to offer her services as a housekeeper to the highest bidder. Her old sweetheart, David Whitcomb, is outbid by an unidentified man, who actually is Stephen's agent. Later, David becomes enamored of an attractive waitress and deserts Barbara, and she subsequently learns that it was Stephen who bought her. Stephen falls deeply in love with Barbara and they are married.
