Synopsis

Teresa, a dance hall girl who stabbed her lover in a quarrel, escapes from Sheriff Dunn and his deputy and wanders into the redwood forest of Carquinez, California. She is assisted by L'Eau Dormant, an educated half-breed Indian who lives in a hollow tree trunk and with whom she soon falls in love. Dormant imagines himself in love with Nellie Wynn, the preacher's daughter, who flirts with him merely because he is different. When Sheriff Dunn, who also loves Nellie, learns that she and Dormant often meet in the forest, he hurries into the woods in a jealous rage. Teresa rushes to Dormant's tree to warn him, but because the young man discovered that Dunn is his father, he refuses to fight him. Just as the three confront one another, a fire sweeps throught the woods, killing them all.
