Synopsis

After Philip Morton, the director of New York's East Side mission and benefactor of struggling author David Aldrich, steals a large sum of money from the mission in order to keep Lillian Drew quiet about their affair, he commits suicide. Knowing that the scandal would render Philip's work at the mission fruitless, David shoulders the blame and is sent to Sing Sing prison. Upon his release, David secures a job in a hardware store, but a detective recognizes him, and he is discharged. Now shunned by his friends as well as his former sweetheart, Helen Chambers, David befriends Kate Hoover, a crook who nearly persuades him to stage a robbery. Finally, Lillian reveals the truth about David's imprisonment to Alexander Chambers, Helen's father, and the new director of the mission. David and Helen are reunited, and all ends happily.

Reviews give several spellings of the photographer's name. Scott's novel was filmed in 1916 by the Premo Feature Film Co. as The Supreme Sacrifice (see listing above).
