Synopsis
Alfred, a young Frenchman disillusioned in love, attempts suicide by jumping off a bridge and lands unhurt in the boat of Countess Elvire, with whom he immediately falls in love. Elvire's father, on the advice of a spiritualist, gives his daughter in marriage to Prince Alado, a former acquaintance of Alfred's. Alfred challenges Alado to a duel; but thinking that Elvire loves Alado, Alfred feigns death and plans to sail for the United States, though she professes her love for him. Alfred returns disguised as a spirit, is exposed by the prince, but escapes. Alfred abducts Elvire from the wedding altar, and they escape in balloons that are to be used as practice targets for antiaircraft guns. After narrow escapes, their balloon is pulled through a tunnel by a train, and they parachute into Elvire's home. There they are married by a nearsighted minister.
