Synopsis

In a small Nova Scotia fishing village, Charity Byfleet marries William Pennland, a romantic soldier of fortune, just before he starts the long voyage home on a small ship bound for Canada. The irrepressible Pennland, however, soon begins a flirtation with the captain's wife and is thrown overboard. He manages to swim to shore, landing on a rough and isolated stretch of the Nova Scotia coast, where he is found half dead and nursed back to health by Hagar, a beautiful girl of mixed blood. Pennland stays with Hagar until he is well and gallantly marries her so as to quiet village gossip; he tells her later of his intention to return to Charity, and Hagar abandons him on a barren island off the coast, relenting only when he is about to expire from exposure and starvation. Charity learns of Pennland's whereabouts and arrives in time to be with him when he dies. Charity takes Hagar into her home, and Hagar soon gives birth to a child, who greatly delights Charity. Hagar, repenting of her deeds, tries to commit suicide, but Charity prevents her, and both women eventually find in new loves a solace for wounded hearts.
