Synopsis
Alice Robinson leaves the West after Paul Temple, a noted actor and the sweetheart of Alice's friend, Jane Dinsmore, advises Alice to accept an offer to be in a New York chorus. After Jane and Temple marry, his drinking, neglect and abuse lead to her death. Jane's father investigates and vows vengeance. Later, Temple, under an assumed name, acts in the cheap stock company for which Alice performs, and she falls under his hypnotic influence. When Temple is engaged to star in a Broadway play, he gets Alice in the ingenue part. They marry and he coaches her in her role. Dinsmore arrives in town and sees the play. Alice, now a star, learns that the marriage was phony and tells Temple she wishes that the gun she uses to shoot him in the play were loaded. After Dinsmore secretly replaces the blanks with real bullets, Alice kills Temple. Her maid then confesses that she overheard Alice's threat. When Dinsmore reads about Alice's arrest, he confesses and kills himself. Alice, now released, accepts her lawyer's love.

Notes
This was the first film directed by Duncan McRae. Soon after the film's presentation, McRae was appointed director-general at Edison. The creation of this position allowed Horace G. Plimpton more time to devote to business matters. Some contemporary news items credit the story to Gertrude McCoy.
