Synopsis

Madeline Durkin, formerly married to one of San Francisco's wealthiest men, is reduced to poverty and longs to see her baby. She resorts to begging on the street. Young James Finlay is about to give her some money when a distraction enables her to steal his wallet and escape. He traces her to a shop where she arrays herself in fine attire, but Finlay takes her in a taxi to the police station; she begs for 3 hours' reprieve, and he agrees. She goes with him to his apartment, and in flashback her story is revealed: She has been accused of having an affair with a man named Wainwright, and in a divorce action she loses custody of her child; she is permitted to see the child once, this very evening. Finlay goes with her to the home of her husband, where she finds the child dead. She finds consolation in the love of Finlay.
