Synopsis

Mark and Elaine are a married couple who live on an isolated stretch of the California coast with their two teenagers and Elaine's sister Kate. Mark and Kate have been having an affair for years. One night when Mark and Elaine have fight, he threatens to leave her and heads for his boat. Kate follows him, hoping that the two of them can run away together, but he refuses and enraged, Kate hits him with a champagne bottle. Mark is knocked overboard and Kate is unable to save him. She returns to the house and does not admit to what has happened. As the family suffers in the aftermath of Mark's death, Kate becomes inceasingly guilt-stricken and starts losing her will to live.
