Synopsis

After Marcella, the wife of coal miner Jim Gregory, elopes with her Italian lover Giovanni, Jim leaves their baby daughter on the doorstep of Tom and Sarah Wentworth and sets out upon a life of wandering. Because the Wentworths bring the child up in ignorance of her history, Dorothea believes that she is their daughter. Dorothea falls in love with Dr. Grant Hunter, but when Tom inherits his father's coal mines, his wife Sarah opposes the courtship, hoping for a more advantageous match. About this time, Giovanni returns, posing as a marquis, and proposes to Dorothea. Sarah is delighted and invites the Marquis del Camachi and Marcella, who is posing as his sister, to stay with them. Dorothea refuses his proposal, however, and in a fit of rage, Giovanni plans to abduct the girl and kill Wentworth. Meanwhile Gregory has returned to lead a strike of the miners and learns that Dorothea is actually his daughter. Together he and Marcella thwart Giovanni's scheme, and in the struggle for Dorothea, Gregory is shot. The police arrest Giovanni; then Gregory, mortally wounded, dies, giving his blessing to Dorothea without revealing that he is her father.
