Synopsis

Jane Brett, a nurse whose father is killed in a major accident at an oil refinery in Pennsylvania, tends the injured and sick while her brother becomes a thief and her sister runs away with a bounder. Jane comes to realize the inhuman labor conditions that exist at the refinery, and appeals to William Jameson, the owner of the refinery, to improve working conditions. When he scorns her, she attempts to kill him and is arrested. John Jameson, William's son, obtains her release, but goes undercover to investigate the truth of her accusations. They fall in love with each other, but Jane is secretly loved by another worker, Morgan, who is jealous of John's hold on her affections. When John confesses his true identity, Morgan, out of feelings of betrayal, leads the angry mob that almost tramples Jane and John. The mob sets fire to five wells and battles police. Eventually, however, the lovers are able to bring about amicable negotiations between management and labor.

Notes

The film was known as The Toilers until late in May 1916. MPSD October 21, 1916 credits Fred Chaston as cinematographer; it is unclear whether the actor credited as Fred Chasten is the same person as Chaston the cinematographer, or whether the studio directory's credit is accurate. Exteriors for the film were shot in the Galloway oil fields near Franklin, PA.
