Synopsis
Wen-dah-ben, halfbreed son of Nee-tah-wee-gan, becomes a protégé of the Layards, who rename him Donald Norton. He grows to manhood under their care and with the companionship of their little girl, Janet, who comes to love him. He becomes manager of a fur-trading post for the Hudson's Bay Company. After a year, he goes to be reassigned, but the new district manager, John Corrigal, though he likes Indians, dislikes Donald. It is only by Layard's plea that Corrigal allows Donald to return to his old post, though under the supervision of another post manager, Dale Millington, who loves Janet. Donald becomes seriously ill that winter, and Millington takes advantage of his absence to impugn Donald's loyalty. Donald is fired by Corrigal, but in the confrontation he becomes convinced that Corrigal is his father. He becomes district manager of a rival concern, causing a decline in the profits of the Hudson's Bay Co. Hearing that his mother has nearly been choked to death, he and Corrigal rush to her side, but she dies before she can clear up the mystery. Millington abducts Janet, but Donald overtakes them and brings them back to the post. Millington tells the story Nee-tah-wee-gan told him--that she had set fire to and burned Corrigal's house and taken his son, John Corrigal, Jr. Corrigal embraces his son and Janet, his daughter-in-law to be.
