Synopsis

Raju, a brash young tour guide in an Indian village, is hired by Marco, a middle-aged archeologist, who wants to show his wife, Rosie, a former dancer, the ancient ruins. Infatuated by the woman's beauty, Raju seduces her and then offers to help her resume her dancing career. When she consents, Marco abandons her, and she becomes Raju's mistress. As she achieves fame, however, their relationship pales, and Raju is forced into the background. He is eventually jailed for forgery, and Rosie leaves him alone and penniless. After his release, he wanders into a deserted temple where his suave manner causes the naive villagers to mistake him for a spiritual leader. Raju gradually begins to live his role and even promises a miracle to end a severe drought. Rather than destroy his followers' illusions, he vows to fast until rain falls. No rain comes, and despite the pleas of the government and Rosie, Raju willingly becomes a martyr.
