Synopsis

On the Cuban island of Riego, Don Balthasar, executor of the Riego estate and governor of the island, keeps the invalid Don Carlos and his sister Serafina prisoners in a castle, plotting to seize their inheritance and marry Serafina. A monk sends to Spain for aid, and José Armando, a vagabond adventurer, arrives. He escapes a pirate band, headed by Smoky Beard, that attacks his ship, and later, encountering Serafina, identifies himself as a Captain of the Dragoons and makes passionate love to her. Called before Balthasar, he poses as a pirate, but when his identity is revealed he falls into the clutches of the governor, who plans to marry Serafina upon the death of Don Carlos. José escapes with her to a sea cave, where they are trapped by Balthasar's men; the lovers pretend to surrender, and José is about to be hanged when Spanish troops arrive to save them.
