Synopsis

Mayor Schmidt of Filbert, Ohio is a grafter who owns a popular saloon. The Civic Reform Society and the Prohibition Party invite him to a conference, during which he falls and strikes his head on a heater. They think he is dead, and when a down-and-out stranger, Charles Smith, who resembles Schmidt, is discovered, they prevail upon him to assume the mayor's identity to further their causes. When Schmidt awakens to find his memory gone, he is picked up and taken to a hospital in a neighboring town. Although Smith is tempted to make money through dishonesty, he changes when he meets Mollie Vaughn, who cares for her sister's illegitimate child by Schmidt. After Smith is badly injured rescuing Mollie and the boy from a barroom brawl, the doctor recognizes the ruse and informs Schmidt's henchmen. When Schmidt returns, his henchmen mistake him for the imposter and shoot him. It then is revealed that Schmidt and Smith are twin brothers. Schmidt recovers and reforms, while Smith wins the next election and marries Mollie.
