Synopsis

Jane, an orphan living on the charity of her aunt, Mrs. Reed, is sent away to a school where she spends the next 10 years. To escape her depressing milieu, she obtains a position in the home of Fairfax Rochester as companion to Adele, Mr. Rochester's ward. When Rochester professes his love for Jane, she happily accepts his proposal of marriage. During the wedding ceremony, a man named Mason interrupts, declaring that Rochester has a wife who is insane and guarded in the house by Grace Poole, an alcoholic. Rochester declares that to all intents and purposes his wife has been dead for years, yet Jane leaves him and in her wanderings reaches the home of St. John Rivers, a young clergyman, who comes to love her and proposes. Meanwhile, Mrs. Rochester, escaping her keeper, sets fire to the house; in the conflagration she dies and Rochester is blinded. Jane returns to find Rochester praying for her return; a specialist restores his sight, and he is happily reunited with Jane.
