Synopsis

On the eve of his honeymoon, Richard Duvall, an American detective employed by the French Secret Police, receives a message that the French Ambassador to England has lost an ivory snuff box that must be recovered immediately. While Richard goes to London to investigate, Grace, his bride, aids in the case by placing herself in a Brussels sanitarium run by Dr. Hartmann, a German spy. After finding the primary suspect murdered, Richard shows up at the sanitarium and, by a clever ruse, secures the snuff box, hiding it in the lining of his top hat. Hartmann kidnaps Richard and begins to torture him for information. Between interrogations, Richard inspects the box and, finding a series of coded messages, substitutes a phony code for the original. To break the silence, Hartmann tortures Richard in front of Grace, and she hands over the box. Convinced of his victory, Hartmann releases the couple, who then return the real coded message to the police.

According to a contemporary news item, Chief Healey, the head of the Chicago police department, refused to issue a permit allowing this film to be screened in Chicago as he felt the large German population of the city would be offended by the story.
