Synopsis

David Langston, a harvester of medicinal herbs found in the forest, comes upon Ruth, the reality of a secret vision he has cherished for years, and she accuses him of "stealing" her ginseng. They meet many times, he tells her of his love, but she is overcome by shyness. David rescues her from her uncle's tyranny; they are married; and though she shrinks from his advances, she is overwhelmed by his patience and understanding. When Ruth tells him she had promised to marry Dr. Harmon, she becomes deathly ill, and Harmon comes to care for her; perceiving, however, that he loves the nurse, she feels released from her promise and recovers. A detective hired by David discovers Ruth's wealthy parents, and believing he has failed her, David sends her away; but upon receiving his written declaration of love, she happily returns to him.
