Synopsis

"Sailor" Burke, en route to prison for a murder he did not commit, escapes and takes a job as a stoker in a ship's engine room. Once on board, Burke's luck worsens when Judge Wray, who sentenced him, boards the ship with Jack Ronsdale, who recognizes the fugitive. Ronsdale identifies Burke, who is then imprisoned on the ship, but escapes during a violent storm. After saving the judge's daughter Jocelyn, who was swept overboard, Burke is cast off by Ronsdale and left to drown. Swimming to a nearby island, he discovers some law books cast adrift in the wreckage, and begins to study them. Ten years pass and Burke reappears in San Francisco as John Steele, criminal lawyer. He meets Jocelyn again, and the two fall in love. Ronsdale also reappears in Steele's life and, after recognizing him, has Jim Gillett, a detective, follow him. Steele eludes Gillett and uncovers Tom Rogers, a witness who clears him of the crime while indicting Ronsdale as the true criminal. Jocelyn then seeks out the exonerated Steele and forgives his past, thus offering him another chance at life with the woman he loves.
