Synopsis

Disillusioned by war and a faithless woman, Philip Douglas Guthrie, the son of the Superintendent of Singapore Police, gets drunk in a dive and accidentally kills the owner when he attempts to take Philip's wallet. Philip goes into hiding under the name of Douglas and meets Poppy La Rue, a member of a stranded theatrical troupe who has been forced by poverty to become a hostess in a low dive. Poppy and Philip fall in love, and she helps him to find refuge on a steamer bound for Penang. Going back for Philip's luggage, she is discovered by Phillip's father, who mistakes her for an adventuress and sends her into the Singapore red light district. She escapes from a house of ill repute and gets on the steamer. The boat blows up, and, after surviving several hazards, Philip and Poppy are reunited. Philip is reconciled with his father, and Poppy forgives the old man for having misjudged her motives.
