Synopsis

When J. Dabney Barron fails all of his college exams, his father, wealthy gem connoisseur Adam Barron, cuts off his monthly allowance and bets his son that the youth is unable to hold a sixty-dollar-a-month position. Finding employment at a detective agency, Dabney is appointed to protect a valuable emerald in the home of John Arden. Posing as a butler in the Arden household, he successfully guards the gem for the month-long period it takes to win his bet. At the end of the month, Dabney proclaims his love to Arden's daughter Betty, but when her father discovers them in a fond embrace, he fires his butler. Preparing to take his leave, Dabney surprises house guest Lord Lawrence opening the safe in Arden's library. Dabney overpowers the thief, wins the bet as well as Betty's love, and proves himself to be his father's son.
