Synopsis
In the South just before the Civil War, a conciliatory William Fletcher, believing that his long-estranged brother John has a son, offers to make an heir of his nephew. Because he needs the money, John disguises his only child, Frances, as a man, and sends her to stay with William. The masquerade works, but, for a party, Frances once again puts on her crinolines and begins a romance with Northern lieutenant Richard Harkness. Politics soon come between them, however, as it is announced at the party that the South has seceeded from the union. Once more dressed as a man, Frances becomes a leading spokesman for the Southern cause, until Richard can stand it no longer and demands satisfaction in a duel. Just before the pistols are fired, however, Frances reveals herself to be a woman, and, putting politics aside, she and Richard make plans for their marriage.
