Synopsis

Harriet Gordon, a wealthy heiress, falls in love with a gentleman crook called Chicago Charlie and agrees to elope with him. At a lonely inn, however, he drugs and then abandons her. Harriet shuns the attentions of men for five years and then becomes engaged to John Mansfield, the district attorney. Charlie has been arrested and imprisoned, and Harriet hires his lover, Peggy Malone, as her maid with the intention of reforming her. After Charlie escapes from prison, he comes to Harriet's estate and sends Peggy away to pawn her mistress' jewels. In her absence, he attacks Harriet, who stabs and kills him. Peggy is arrested, but Detective Scully, who has been trailing Charlie and is aware of the circumstances, reports that he killed the crook.
