Synopsis
On a long road overlooking the town of her birth, Mary Page recalls scenes from her life: After refusing the marriage proposal of Barnes, Mary goes to New York with writer Allen Wilson, a summer border whom she fancies, to escape her father's brutality. She lives with Wilson for three years until she decides that her life is an offense to society. Mary finds work at a shirtwaist factory, but after she organizes the women workers to strike because of a wage cut, the owner, Maddox, who is Wilson's friend, hires thugs to cause trouble. Because Mary complains to the mayor, who, she discovers, is Barnes, the women are allowed to keep their former wage. One night, the manager locks them in to force them to work overtime. Several women die in a fire, and Mary, badly burned, is cared for by the mayor and his sister. After Maddox threatens to reveal Mary's past if he is prosecuted, Mary leaves, but Barnes pursues her, and they marry.

Notes
This was Valli Valli's first film. Incidents in the film were probably based on the Triangle shirtwaist factory fire, which occurred in New York City in March 1911 and resulted in the deaths of many women workers.
