Synopsis

When Preston Platt, the thrill-seeking son of millionaire stockbroker Jonathan Platt, is disowned by him, Preston determines to prove to his father that making money is not so difficult. Assuming the name of William Black, Preston obtains the position of guide and valet to Ethelbert Vanderpool, an effeminate youth, and goes West with him to inspect the Free Booter mine in which Ethelbert is interested. Free Booter stock has been the joke of the stock market, and when Preston recalls that his former valet Pringle owns some shares, he conceives of a plan. After instructing Pringle to approach the elder Platt and purchase more Free Booter stock, Jonathan salts the mine with ore, stages a fake explosion, and a rich deposit is discovered. Preston's father and his business rival rush to buy a controlling interest in the mine and, as a result, Pringle makes a handsome profit on his shares. Preston then reveals that the strike is a fake, but having made good on his boast, is reinstated into the good graces of his father.
