Synopsis

Helen, an American art student living in Paris' Latin Quarter, turns down her friend Tom Davis' marriage proposal because she is in love with Jacques, who keeps his wife and son secret from her. After Jacques rejects Helen, she dies giving birth to his child. Tom decides to raise the baby, named Alice, as his own daughter and, after he inherits a fortune, they move to Long Island where Alice grows up in luxury. When she falls in love with Eugene La Salle, Tom gives her a letter and a ring from Helen explaining about Jacques and warning her that anyone having the same ring would be either Jacques or his descendant. On the eve of her marriage to Gene, she discovers that Gene has the same ring and she fears that they are brother and sister. Though they plan a double suicide, Gene relates that Jacques was his stepfather, not his real father, and they then are free to marry.
