Synopsis

While dictating a letter about his decision to separate from his extravagant and frivolous wife, Wall Street broker Thomas Maughm confesses his love for his stenographer Mary Moreland, and she reveals that she loves him as well. She promises to join him in Boston that night, but before she leaves, Mrs. Maughm tells Mary that she still loves her husband. In Boston, Mary convinces Maughm to return, but when Mrs. Maughm castigates him for his chance meetings with Mary, who quit and now works for Basil Romney, a cultured English invalid, Maughm leaves for his Maine hunting cabin for a rest. When Romney falls in love with Mary, she quits and becomes a public stenographer, where she learns of a scheme to swindle Maughm out of a large investment. Mary warns him in Maine, and although he wants her to stay, she leaves while he is away. Mary refuses Mrs. Maughm's offer of money to keep away from Maughm, but when Mary learns that Mrs. Maughm is pregnant, she goes to Denver. After Mrs. Maughm dies in childbirth, Mary accepts Maughm's proposal.
