Synopsis

In 1836, during the Mexican revolution in which Texas obtains its freedom, 250 Americans under Colonel Travis, including Davy Crockett and James Bowie, capture the Alamo against 5,000 Mexicans under General Santa Anna. During the battle, Crockett and Bowie argue about the relative effectiveness of their favorite weapons, the shotgun and the knife. Bowie dies of consumption, but his last act is the killing of a Mexican with the knife he invented. Silent Smith escapes the stockades and makes his way through the ranks of Mexicans to General Sam Houston leading the American rangers. He warns of the danger facing his comrades at the Alamo, but Houston and his forces arrive too late to prevent their massacre. Santa Anna recaptures the Alamo but is then routed by Houston.

Notes

This film was planned to be a Mutual Masterpicture made by the Reliance Motion Picture Corp. before the Triangle Film Corp. and the Fine Arts Film Co. were formed. It had its premiere in New York on October 3, 1915. According to a contemporary New York Times review, this was the first film in which Douglas Fairbanks acted, although The Lamb, in which Fairbanks starred, was actually released before this film. According to material in the Aitken Brothers Papers, the film's complete title was The Martyrs of the Alamo, or the Birth of Texas and "story arrangement" was by W. Christy Cabanne and Theodosia Harris.
