Synopsis

Retired financier Cyrus Baird wishes to marry his daughter Susan to the wealthy but effeminate Ethelbert Granger, but she has other ideas. When James Morton rescues Susan from drowning, a mutual love affair develops, but because James is related to a bitter enemy of the Baird family, Cyrus discourages the romance. Ethelbert invites the Bairds for a cruise on the houseboat of Max Rupholdt, a German spy who plans to mine the harbor. James, who through misleading circumstances is believed to be a spy, swims to the boat and locates the explosives, but Rupholdt catches him and the two fight. Max forces Susan into the speedboat in which he plans to set the mines while James swims to shore, and as the boat passes under a bridge, James reaches down, grasps her hands and pulls her to safety. Soon afterwards, Rupholdt's boat is destroyed by one of his own mines, and James is celebrated as a hero.
