Synopsis

Bob Gordon, a young and ambitious mountaineer from the backwoods, falls in love with Judge Stanhope's beautiful daughter Helen, but she regards him with haughty disdain. Suspecting that the building of a railroad in the future will add to the value of some mountain land, Bob prevents Stanhope from purchasing the property. Helen's older sister Mabel confesses to her that she has been seduced, and when she refuses to reveal the man's identity, Judge Stanhope assumes it is young Nelson Williams. When Stanhope encounters Williams riding, he beats him with a hunting crop, and Williams' horse bolts, throwing him over a cliff. A jury declares Williams' death accidental, and Judge Stanhope remains unaware that Williams was innocent even after Mabel elopes with Jack Ames. Meanwhile, Bob has retrieved the riding crop and demands that Helen marry him in exchange for his silence about Williams' death. To save her father, and also her mother, an invalid, Helen agrees to the marriage. Although Helen loathes Bob, she agrees to teach him and encourage his ambition to run for the legislature, on his promise that they will divorce after the election. However, after two drunks heckle Bob about Helen's absence, she becomes indignant, and returns to him, having learned to love him at last.
