Synopsis

John Nichols and his sister, Lena, separately leave the small yellow farmhouse in the New England hills where they grew up and go to the big city. John marries and becomes the father of two girls, Carrie and Anne; John's wife, Mathilde, is ashamed of his humble origins and forces him to break off contact with his family. Lena marries Henry Rivers Grahme, whom she knows only as Henry Rivers. When Henry's father learns of the marriage, he has Henry kidnaped and sent to sea for 6 months. Lena returns home destitute and dies in childbirth; her child, also known as Lena, is reared to young womanhood by Mrs. Nichols. When Lena's grandfather dies, her Uncle John takes her in, but she is not happy, for her aunt is cruel to her. Lena is later reunited with her father and marries Durwood Belmont, the stepson of her father.
