Synopsis

Fernie Schmidt, who lives with her parents in the rear of their delicatessen, finds the atmosphere and smells of the building repulsive. Pop Schmidt, who fails to understand his daughter's desire for a more pleasant home, has planned to marry her off to Peter Halitovsky, the sausage salesman. At a dance, Fernie meets Jack Dugan. He tells her he is in stocks, and she falls in love with him. When she returns home, Pop, incensed by her rejection of Peter, turns her away from the house. Fernie takes a job in a department store; and one Sunday, at a picnic, Jack proposes and she accepts. That evening, Fernie is invited home for dinner, and Pop announces his decision to buy a new home; Peter proposes, and she is about to reject him when Jack appears, announcing that he has purchased a delicatessen business. Fernie is happily resigned to her fate.
