Synopsis

Living on a desolate island in the South Seas, Elsa Melton is bitter and disillusioned with island life. She is coveted by McMasters, a lecherous derelict who is manager of the trading station. Jimmy, her husband, unaware of McMasters' desires, is unsympathetic with Elsa and embarks on a short sea trip; but he is caught in a sudden typhoon. McMasters attempts to attack Elsa, and she escapes in the storm to the beach, where she is found at dawn by Hitchens, a yachtsman, who understands her situation and takes her aboard his yacht. Hitchens causes her to believe that Jimmy has drowned at sea and at length persuades her to marry him, the ceremony being performed by the captain. In San Francisco she lives luxuriously with Hitchens but soon discovers him to be a rake and is again unhappy. When Hitchens tells her the marriage was invalid, Elsa returns to the island, where Jimmy's assistant recognizes Hitchens; and trying to escape, Hitchens is killed by a shark. Elsa and Jimmy are reunited, and he is promoted to a new job in Australia.
