Synopsis

Martha Redmond leaves her poor parents' home to attempt a singing career in New York. Failing this, she becomes an artist's model and soon his mistress. After he abandons her to marry a wealthy man's daughter, Martha becomes a "fallen woman" of notoriety. She meets Barrett, a millionaire's son, who tries to win her in a card game. When she leaves disgusted, Barrett offers her a large sum of money for sex, which Martha tears up, saying that she would accomplish something if she had his opportunity. Humiliated, Barrett sends her a check for $100,000. A year later, after Barrett has been ruined financially by Martha's former lover and his father-in-law, Martha shows Barrett a hospital she has built to care for orphans with the money. Barrett proposes, but Martha refuses. After the father-in-law, enraged because of the artist's treatment of his daughter, kills him, Barrett, in a drugged state, is arrested for the murder, but Martha obtains a dictograph confession from the father-in-law. She then accepts Barrett's love.
